We paid around 10K for our daughter to attend university and get a BA. Now, 25 years later her son wants to attend the same school. Tuition, room and board will be $200,000. He will going to the state school and living at home.
And yet the protesters blame Wall Street? No blame to the tenured professors that make more per hour than many CEO's? No blame to the university administrators that live in paid housing and retire with millions in pensions? No blame to the athletic personnel that make more than many CEO's?
Knowledge IS free. Education, because of the reasons above, can't be. Someone has to pay for it.
So you get to decide what people "need" and if what they have exceeds it - you want to take it away.
If I am retired and can afford to "gift" my kids something significant, it is my right to do so after working a lifetime, saving money, not being a burden on society, giving time and money to charities for decades. But somehow YOU think YOU will decide that I have more than I "need."
Many of those occupying WS have more than I do, when I really think about it. They live rent free (thanks to their parents), pay nothing for health care (thanks to the Obamacare and their parents), pay no car insurance (thanks to their parents), and manage to have more gadgets than I do (thanks to having income with no expenses).
I think they have more "stuff" than they "need" - if they'd like to contact me, I can tell them where to ship me their iPads, iPhones, video cameras, and laptops. I have none of those, and were sure like them.
I would have thought less than 9%. You can add the CEOs of all those .... hey wait a minute, aren't they on Wall Street? I wonder why they chose that location?
So you knowingly made a statement that a) you were pretty sure was NOT true, and b) you never made the attempt to find out the truth.
In case you forgot your EXACT WORDS: Although some like to think they have the ability to get to the 1%, very, very few do. It is pretty much a closed society and many enter thru inheritance.
I think I will attend the Occupy Tampa rally today, and maybe tomorrow. Talk with a few of the protestors. I don't have much to protest, but agree with them that, they do.
Standing shoulder to shoulder with folks that want to walk away from their debts, and live off of other people's efforts. I personally prefer to stand shoulder to shoulder with folks that are self sufficient. But to each his own.
Let me see if I got this straight. Kids for a long time and are still told the path to a good job goes thru College. They take the leaders of the Country at their word and enter College. Many need Student loans to be able to pay for it because their dad doesn't work for a Bank. But that OK, the Govt backs those loans and the Bank eagerly gives...... all fine and dandy, however, grads are finding it hard to get Jobs..Hmmm, those kids are now becoming more and more incapable of paying that debt. Oh no say the Banks, loans are defaulting, we need the Congress to make sure these worthless kids don't have access to Bankruptcy protection. In 2005, the GOP Congress did just that. in 2009 Govt ran to the rescue of the Banks, Bailout, yet for this rescue of all these kids and even older people trying to retool their skill set, are finding it's all been a lie. "Education gets you a Job", wrong. These people are justifiably angry and are likely to get angrier the long they see the Repubs prevent any action to build Job growth, now, not 10 yrs from now. Now they are hearing the Cantor like people in Congress, calling them "Mobs". The protests are not all about Student Loans, but a good part of it is. Mostly the Protests are about the inequality that exist in this Country. The same inequality that led to the Great Depression and these people do not want to see that happen.
This country need to get away from glorifying college degrees, and instead highlight EDUCATION.

but a lot of these people are just... i don't know the word for it. Whiners?
I don't like the victim mentality. I don't feel the slightest bit bad for their personal tragedies of not being able to afford antidepressants. I just think our financial and monetary regulations need reform.
I know you don't care about the personal tragedies of your fellow citizen, and it is common for "conservatives" to talk about the victim mentality, yet they can't stop crying about how the US elite are being treated so unfairly. See, YOU DO care about the personal tragedies of your fellow citizen as long as they belong in the top 1%.

As for the debts, I didn't find many that wanted to walk away from them. I found some that wanted the same kind of treatment that was given to Banks, ie. relief in the form of time to get to a point when the loans payments can be made. There are a lot of reasons for them being there beyond their debts.
If a person can't afford their debts, they should be stopped from making any more debts... but that isn't what you are looking for is it?
