That's not half--it's a third--but things aren't good out there.

Yeah we can sustain this

Time to make changes, to make sure we are helping those that need it and not those getting aid due to lies or loopholes. We cant afford to continue down this road no matter how much democrats want us to

What about the top 1 percent of income "earners" and wealth holders? They have received the lion's share of government benefits, through friendlier and friendlier tax codes, regulations, and subsidies.

The article states that the figure includes people recieving Social Security or Medicare. If you limit it to those recieving cash welfare, Medicaid, food stamps or subsidized housing the figure is about 34%. Still not a very good sign for the country.

Also the often quoted stat that close to 50% of Americans or households pay no taxes is a bit misleading:

Quote:
Most of those households will still be hit by payroll taxes. Just 18.1% of households pay neither payroll nor federal income taxes and they are predominantly the nation’s elderly and poorest families.

Should we change this by eliminating Social Security and Medicare?

Our government buys $16 muffins, $400 for a hammer and $600 for a toilet seat. No bargain there when they spend the taxpayers money.. then they want to up the taxes to pay for all the wasted money buying things that are outrageously priced.

The $16 dollar muffins weren't true--I saw it on the news. It was a full breakfast buffet for some type of gathering, but the hotel/restaurant receipt just listed it as "muffins" for some strange reason, and that's what whoever went digging for it found. Once they brought it to the public's attention they disproved it, but the rumor just keeps floating around. I'm too lazy to find a link, but I'm sure it's an easy google.

The military stuff is probably true though...unfortunately. I think that's how they hide things in their budget that they don't want the public to know about, or don't want to go to congress to publicly ask for appropriations.
