So you didn't read the link to see that the mayor said they couldn't afford a court fight but more people, by far, would see that specific cross out there on the highway than on top of the water tower. Of course, you don't see that he thinks he outthought the atheists but then you are biased in your way of thinking. I wonder if they have the money to post a sign about why that cross is out there. I would contribute some so they could.

Imo, the average christian's spirit(soul) is not strong.
And many portrary themselves as meek children of god, yet harbor an abundance of hatred and hypocrisy and feelings of revenge against those who do not believe as they do.
Same exact scenario as in my local town. For over 50 years they put a star on a fire tower up at Christmas and a cross at Easter. Then a lone atheist complained and the ACLU stepped in to force the removal on grounds it was public property. The mayor refused and said take us to court. The cross is( long ago) paid for by private funds and maintained by private funds. If any other religious group wants to put up a symbol on the tower they are free to do so if they pay for it. The city overwhelmingly wanted it to stay and were willing to donate to fight them in court. The ACLU backed down and the person who wanted it removed dropped the suit.
Call their bluff. Take them to court. Drag the person in who wanted it removed and expose them to public scrutiny.
If a religious symbol is funded privately, it should stay on private property.
If a religious group wants to put a symbol on a CITY water tower, they are violating the separation of church & state.
When you say the "city" overwhelmingly wanted it to stay, are you referring to the council?
NO city council represents ALL citizens.
Or did they take some kind of vote of ALL citizens in town?
Crazy that anyone would spend the time or effort on something so incredibly NOT IMPORTANT.

How is this so hard to understand? The cross was erected and maintained on public property using goverment resources. Labor, materials, real estate, funds, etc.
Additionally, having only a cross on the only water tower in town suggests government endorsement of religion.

I am saddened that where I live looks like 1940 South....There are some decent city planners, but many "dry counties usually-lol the most religious areas also make the most moonshine"....
In the meantime I guess Amerikan politicos like Romney are getting off on this...they know Appalachia is a "Dead Zone" intellectually, so they can take advantage of it for votes
That was long before I was born although I am much older than you are. Do you not know why the KKK was founded? I would never have supported them but I did find this story pretty humorous when the tiny town mayor really got the best of those non-believers.
Lol google Elizabethton TN Mayor- he was arrested last summer for selling and using prostitutes in Red Roof Inn,...but he is a "good christian"
