Naw, the Dems nominated an avowed socialist named George McGovern and when I heard him promise all those welfare people from California he would work to get them a guaranteed annual wage I had to think that he was not going to be good for us.

Actually that sounded a lot like what those kids in NYC are demanding, to me.

All of this was made from scratch and contained everything "unhealthy" such as lard, real butter, whole milk, sugar, cream, eggs, etc. If you look at school pictures from that era, you'll see how skinny the children were. The kids got all everything they needed in one meal. Vitamins, fat, calories, and nutrients to keep them healthy. Then after they ate, they went out to play at recess for an hour. When school ended, they usually walked home. So, naturally, excess fat was burned off.

Today, this is typical lunch in my area: prepacked pizza, corn from the can (very high in salt), a whole wheat bread (again prepacked) and non fat chocolate milk. Now recess has been shortened to only 30 minutes and children no longer walk to school or walk home from school.
Its also about serving sizes and the extra calories that kids get in between meals. Physical activity is also a major contributor I agree.

yes, but when they take away Physical Education because rising costs (can't afford the equipment), how are those kids exactly working off that 500 calorie lunch, 300 of which comes from the fries? Recess? feh, most recesses are spent indoors these days.

I stayed thin even though our school lunches were more "fattening" than today's because we were required to have PE. Today, it's pretty much an ELECTIVE.

So, all of these attempts to make school lunches "healither" is actually costing us money, neglecting the kids of the nutrients they need and actually making school lunches more unhealthy.
I well remember those school lunches of 50 years ago. I was a teacher but still ate with the kids. God, some of those meals were so good with very little in the way of things out of cans like so much of what today is.

Thank you.

I don't understand how people are attempting to associate these fries with recent trends in weight. School lunches have been crap for a long, long time, suddenly yanking these fries away isn't going to do a damn thing. I think most of my peer group at a square of pizza and chocolate milk every weekday for much of their teen years.

That was back when people still believed in community and didn't mind spending a few bucks to make sure kids ate well. Now, Republics have been in office for so long, they just doll out slop for the kids and call it a day. Bad for everyone, but it saves money.

They need to return to 5 day a week gym classes. I'm sure any school district can afford a kickball. You can play like 20 different sports with one of those.

Also, let them keep score. If they didn't want kids to keep score they shouldn't have taught them how to count.

Then if you think the schools should be telling kids what they can eat, how about they mandate that every kid with a C and below has to go to school through the entire summer. Can't have too many dumb kids either. Yeah, yeah, I know you are their parent and you want to go on vacation but if you don't want any say in what they eat, maybe you shouldn't have any choice in what they learn or when they learn, either. I don't want to be subsidizing your dopey kids when they become adults and need food stamps, housing breaks and welfare because they can't find a job or they are underemployed. Isn't "education" the school's primary function?

Maybe we should have your kids all p*e in a cup, too, and get tested for drugs. Let's weed out the dope smokers and pill poppers now before they become a drain on society later.

And your girls, let's test them in school for sexual activity so we don't have to subsidize so many single parents. Maybe we can put birth control in their school lunches. They and their offspring are a really big drain on society.

Which one of those things is the job of a public school?

and can they afford the accompanying law suits when mommy doesn't like the fact that her little jimmy got hit in the face by a wayward ball?

in this sue happy country of ours, schools are being held to task for any injury that happens in the playground

I skinned my knee, broke my wrist, killed the nerves in the left cheek on my face, got a deep laceration to my head, broke a toe, and took a tennis racket to my head, all during Physical Education classes.

Not once did my parents "blame" the school

Today, if Jimmy even comes home with a scratch and it happened during school, parents are on the phone demanding what happened and then filing lawsuits.

Makes perfect sense. Conservatives love screw around with people's private lives as much as liberals. Probably even more so. Liberals and conservatives are pretty much the same thing. They just differ on what stupid economic policies they want to enact, which part of your private life they wish to dictate, and what facts and scientific evidence they ignore. All the while proclaiming the other as dumber, more intrusive, and ignorant.
