See this link : Dollar coin? It's time - latimes.com

The government could cut spending by replacing the dollar bill with a dollar coin. If they choose not to, they should eliminate the dollar coin altogether. Currently the treasury has vaults of excess dollar coins nobody wants.

We need to be a nation with either a dollar bill or dollar coin, having both does not work.

If you come in possession of a Morgan, Peace or Eagle dollar coin, I will give you a $1 paper dollar for each of them.

Our currency notes are pretty ****ing awful in general. I like how they do it elsewhere... different sizes for the blind and made out of much more durable material.

IMO they ought to bring the $2 bill into bigger production if they phase out the $1 bill. Lord knows you can't buy anything except 7-Eleven taquitos for a dollar or less these days.

Yes, that would make sense, but copying anything the Europeans do clearly does NOT make sense to the Tea Party set in this country.

We should have adopted the European model of currency long ago.

Of course, that will not happen in our lifetime for obvious reasons.

hell, I agree with some of the original Tea Party's sentiments (back when it was mostly a movement by Paul supporters) and even I think we should redesign our notes.

Then you are no longer welcome in the Tea Party.

They left behind the ideas of Dr. Paul long ago, my friend.

The Buck Stops Here: $1 Coins to Be Curtailed - WSJ.com

^ The dollar coin program has been ended, citing government waste. I think they're making a mistake here. Yes, there is no point in producing coins that will just sit around in vaults. However, the government would actually save MORE money if they kept producing these coins and stopped producing dollar bills instead.

Forget the dollar coin. Mint $5, $ 10 and $20 dollar coins. People would use them and they'd last forever. Impossible to counterfeit except by foreign powers and they can do that with paper currency anyway. There's a reason they don't. Maybe because it would be too hard to influence the money supply by printing. Just make the $20 coin the size of an older silver dollar, the $10 coin the size of a half dollar and the $5 coin larger than a quarter.

Bill Clinton spent $40 million on a godawful ad campaign to try to get people to use to 'gold' dollar coin. It didn't work. But that was about 15 years ago, so I suppose it's high time to wast another few million. Why not, we're only 15 trillion in debt.
