Alston's statement was foolish and wrong : News-Record.com : Greensboro & the Triad's most trusted source for local news and analysis (http://www.news-record.com/blog/54431/entry/129720 - broken link)

While introducing Gov. Bev Perdue at the state NAACP convention in High Point yesterday, he accused (http://www.news-record.com/blog/55399/entry/129633 - broken link) the tea party of being at its core a racist organization...

Assigning to the tea party the motive of trying to prevent any African Americans of holding any elective office is wrongheaded and contrary to reality.

But sweeping generalizations -- especially when they can be so easily refuted by obvious facts -- are foolish. Coming from Guilford County's highest elected official, such statements are inexcusable. If this sort of thing strengthens Alston's standing with his political base, shame on them. If he's given another term as leader of the county's governing board, shame on all of us.

After Perdue spoke, I asked Alston if he would apply his condemnation of the Tea Party to Conservatives for Guilford County (link), a local group that has pressured the county commissioners to cut spending and describes itself as an affiliate of the Tea Party and has hosted Tea Party events in Guilford County.
"The Tea Party's philosophy is from the ground up. Their philosophy is that they want to take back their country, so they say. And that means they don't want a black person in the White House, they don't want any blacks in any elective office. I stand by that."
Looks like this is going to be one of the ugliest elections in recent times. The democrats are pushing an agenda from the top all the way down to label everyone racist who doesn't vote for a democrat, again...
