The biggest travesty is if the kids in this Spanish class are learning MEXICAN Spanish, and not just learning Mexican culture and history.

Yeesh, that'd be like teaching Alabamian accented English to foreigners!

I never said the pledge beyond elementary school because the country deserves more than a forced demonstration of patriotism theater.

The point is, I'm not entirely sure how a bunch of high schoolers can be "indoctrinated" by words in a language they only have a cursory understanding of. Learning the way that other people honor their country (pledges, anthems, etc) is a fantastic way of understanding the culture and political systems of their countries. There's so much that can be said about American culture from our pledge and anthem, which is why students of English learn it in many other countries (including Mexico and Iceland).

Knock yourself out. I've always had (along with most democrats) strong views against the illegal immigration issue. Historically if you look at it, it's always been the republicans, especially corporate shills like Bush and Perry that have been the most pro-illegal as it's good for their bottom dollars.

Why are they not learning American anthems? Many kids don't know basic American history.

Why are they being Patriotic to Mexico?

Poor excuse.
We can learn about other countries without being patriotic to them.

When you are having to say the national anthem to another country but cant say the national anthem to our own country there is a problem.

Hmmm and Ted Kennedy? Pelosi? Hillary wanted to give them drivers licenses, Reid? Obama?
One can argue both parties are pro illegal. Actions speak louder than words.

Completely agree.
Each party has their own special interest in mind when it comes to illegals.

But so that this thread doesn't get moved or closed, to keep it from becoming all-about-illegals,
I still have a problem with the whole allegiance-to-another-country thing
and would encourage my kids to refuse participation as well.

...because national politics is essential when studying any language, didn't you know? I'm sure they memorize all things related to the UK before English class starts. As if the only country on earth where they speak Spanish is in Mexico.
