Personally, I think college costs way too much. Back before the 90s I guess, college was affordable and you could actually go to a university fulltime and work to pay it off as you go. Nowadays that seems almost impossible. I know some of you people have you "reservations" toward liberal degrees but they are important too since the generally deal with society and whatnot I guess. Its knowledge. however, I don't feel that they are as important as Engineering degrees, Math degrees, Science Degrees (Not so much astronomy if we are talking about practicality), Medical degrees. I personally feel that there should be more "tracts" to guide kids in these directions and putting them in a positive light. Hell, they should give the old "MSM" slant and the "How TV perceives Reality that actually impacts actual reality" slant to scientific degrees. America is falling behind. Fast.
Notice how I didn't mention Political Science, Law, or Business. However I feel that "Basic Personal Finance" class should be a mandatory class required for High School Graduation. There should also be an "Advanced Personal Finance" Class required for completion of a 4 year college degree. Just my 2 cents.

I graduated in 1987 from a pretty good private university. Full time tuition plus room and board came to around $10,000 that year. We all thought it quite steep.
Now, that seems like a bargain. Don't ask what my alma mater charges now.
No not true, as someone who spent 12 yrs in college..working on 3 degrees...it is not related to profits. My interest rate is abouut 2.8%..not a hefty markup. My goal was simply not to work while in college and to enjoy my time there. To do that I needed an income..and loans were the way to do it in addition to scholarships. My choice..as is the choice of many others..with a calculated risk..can I make an income to pay off my debt...those who took the risk and now realize the consequences..and instead of doing like I did (live with room mates for 10 yrs, work 2 jobs, go without, start a family late, eat alot of mac and cheese), want a free ride at tax payers expenses. Not going to happen....
There has been a huge "for-profit-college/university" scam going on. Look beyond yourself.

If I were these kids I would want the debt canceled so I could start a career without debt. That would let me choose employers instead of going to the highest bidder.

Nope to the car and house but education benefits all of us so the government should provide it for free. It should also control the amount paid so 40k per year tuition is eliminated so no matter the school the students pay the same.
I base this on the observation that academic ability, unlike the ability to pay which is a function of choosing the correct parents, is evenly distributed over all races and class and should be the only determinant in college education. This policy would, among other things eliminate the Ivy League exclusivity.
Right! Only well connected financial corporations should be bailed out. Mere students of course should be held to financial responsibility. IMHO either everybody is protected by bankruptcy or nobody is. If ING can be bailed out so can J.Q. Student.
Student loans are non-dischargable by bankruptcy as are certain other kinds of debts per CONTRACT.
Since you are proposing the voiding of centuries of contract law as that is what makes the debt non-dischargable.....then deadbeat dads can also declare bankruptcy and not pay child support.

Cultural, economic, GENETIC, family background etc. ALL play a huge part in academic ability. It's not even across groups of people, it's not even close.
Go pick a random 1 year old living in poverty in a bad neighborhood whose dad has an 85 IQ and is serving life in the state pen for murder. Yeah, they will be in Harvard in no time if it only cost less.
P.S. Some highschool kid named Barry Sanders Jr. is dominating highschool football as a running back. Im sure any randomly selected kid over all races and class would be able to do this if they weren't so exclusive about whom gets to be the running back.
