DURBIN, LAUTENBERG, HARKIN, BLUMENTHAL ASK MLB PLAYERS ASSOCIATION TO VOLUNTARILY BAN TOBACCO USE

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – On the eve of an expected 15 million viewers–including many children–tuning in to watch the first game of the 2011 World Series tomorrow, U.S. Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL), Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), Tom Harkin (D-IA), and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) today called on the Major League Baseball (MLB) Players Association to ban the use of all tobacco products, including smokeless tobacco, on the field, in the dugout, and in the locker rooms at MLB venues.

Free country?? Not with these guys around it's not.

All Democrats, if I'm not mistaken. As bad and stupid as Senate Repulbicans can be at times, they're still not this bad & stupid. I'm surprised that Chuck Schumer is not on that list. Usually he's the first to glom onto any petty diversionary issue that will get him camera time.

I agree with them, since children tend to copy their sport star heros, maybe there should be a ban on tobacco chewing. I wonder if repubs had suggested this would there be the same backlash on here?

i would still call it being stupid because there are far more important issues right now than some athlete using tobacco, and some kid watching them do it on TV. tobacco is a legal product right now, so until such time as it is made illegal, regardless of who suggests it, calling for a voluntary ban on tobacco products is bull sierra.

Chewing tobacco while playing baseball should be banned. It stains the grass and looks gross.

As I am in favor of letting people damage themselves by using any drug that amuses them. I am not opposed to chewing tobacco in public except for the gross and leaving stains part. But be aware that while smoking the stuff destroys you lungs while chewing it destroys your face leaving you cancerous and ugly at the same time.
