Yes, there is something missing. I'll bet a gun was involved... he likely said "You ______ punks had better get off my property, or else". And not wanting to be shot or killed, they left.
Wrong? No, no one treats me differently because I smoke, sure not being able to smoke in a bar is a "bummer' but it's not what I would refer to as being treated poorly.

A few years ago, here in Wisconsin, the state passed an indoor smoking ban (pertaining to bars, restaurants, etc). You would have thought the world was ending and individual liberty was being trampled, to hear some at the time...but I think now most are glad they can go out to get a drink or some dinner, and not come out with their clothes reeking of second hand smoke.
Since roughly 80% of the adult population does not smoke, smokers are a decided minority. I always tell non-smokers there will come a day when something you do the vast majority of people don't do or like including me and you'll need me to stand up in defense of you.
I am not a smoker, but I do believe smokers are treated badly.
Bigotry by its nature is the singling out of a group to be treated without the tolerance and plain courtesy given to others. Treating smokers badly is a widely accepted bigotry.

Care to elaborate? Enacting smoking bans is a public health issue. What kind of "tolerance" and "plain courtesy" are you advocating?

For example, "You are a smoker, you must be stupid, and have no self control." although the smokers were trying years to quit. I see this kind of mentality all the time.
