I'm would like to know what you guys think about my views, here. The paragraph directly below is from Darwin's views on patriotism, although I have expanded the idea, a bit, in the rest of my post.
"There can be no doubt that a tribe including members who, from possessing in a high degree the spirit of patriotism, fidelity, obedience, courage and sympathy, were always ready to give aid to each other and to sacrifice themselves for the common good, would be victorious over most other tribes (thiefs & murderers, many in suits and ties); and this would be natural selection."
This is one definition of a patriot: a person who regards himself or herself as a defender, especially of individual rights, against presumed interference by the federal government (I will add, against interference by swindlers in trade, as well).
My belief is that in order to save the human race from chaos and self-destruction, we need to come to some realization that we are all humans descended from one anscestor (tribe), and if we stay divided, we will be conquered. In the end, if we don't stop our fighting and feelings of specialness, we will have an elite group of people who have taken over the entire world, leaving the rest of us, worldwide, in constant chaos, fighting over scraps, in constant insecurity.
There will be no loyalty. If you don't play the game, if you don't fit into the mold, you will be left in the cold to defend what little you have.
We will be the Reublicans, Democrats, Libertarians, Socialists, Communists, Anarchists, black, white, brown, Christian, Muslim, Jewish, atheist, agnostic, pagan, male, female, young and old all fighting each other over who is right, forever and ever, while the people at the top keep up their game of manipulation, always and forever winning, smiling, and winking...

If this is the definition of Patriot, then would someone with large material wealth who advocates raising tax rates on himself so that the common good can better be served (say with a universal single payer healthcare system) be a Patriot?

Of course, and it's a start, but our tax system is so dysfunctional, we would need a complete overhaul for things to finally straighten out.
There are many people out there who are not asking for much. They just want safe shelter, food, and their health, because we need our health to work and provide for ourselves, right?
As it is, the wealthy are not interested in helping their fellow human beings live a better life, no matter how much they pretend. They hide behind the constitution, religion, or some superior image of themselves. They don't need to care, because they have an endless supply of workers fighting each other for jobs. No biggie, to them, whether you were a good citizen at one time. There are thousands of people coming up behind the worker just waiting for them to fall down, and they'll step right over their dying bodies to climb out of their hole, and the masses' heroes in the political and religious arena are never around to hear their cries. They can shout about freedom and the constitution all they want. I know where many in our government and in our churches stand, in the end.
The wealthy would not need to fear anarchy if they had some common decency, and maybe a little dollop of common sense.

At this point, we need an educated, enlightened "mob", which we don't have (although, I think some people are awakening). Everybody is fighting over petty differences and stuck in a brainwashed state, hoping to be part of the special group who comes out on top, which almost never happens.
