Northerners are moving south for jobs, better weather, more affordable housing, and less crowded conditions. If you think they're moving because they've "seen the light" and wish to live in a Republican-dominated, conservative heaven, ask native southerners how conservative the NY and NJ Yankees are who have been moving into Raleigh and Charlotte.

And North Beach is right.

The author is certainly entitled to his "interpretation" of the data, but "politics" is probably a much less likely motivator for most folks moving, than stuff like weather, impending retirement, a lower cost of living, and moving to a local "culture" where they may even have some kin and "roots".

For example, it's no secret that this very forum is full of (conservative) folks who've retired and moved from "blue" California to "red" places like Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, etc.. And it's also no coincidence that the reasons they usually cite are (duh)... retirement, lower cost of living, and being in an area they "relate to" better than (ugh) "Liberal California"!

But since they were increasingly unhappy with "blue" Cali to begin with, and couldn't afford to live here anyway, perhaps it's simply for the best that they go live in a more "simpatico" place now (such as it is)! And hey, we're already paying for plenty of other red state moochers (http://blogs.alternet.org/speakeasy/2010/04/18/red-state-moochers-federal-taxes-favor-those-who-complain-the-most-about-federal-taxes/ - broken link), so what's a few more "mouths to feed"?!

lower cost of living usually means less tax as well. Less tax is a characteristic of red. Businesses like less tax. People typically like less tax.

Oh boy! This is getting good.
It's better than the other basket cases that surround me, except Ohio. Granted, living near Allentown wasn't utopia especially when crime started going up in areas like Mount Pocono and Scranton with all the New Yorkers moving in.

Ok well you can dream all you like. You might want to look at where the growth is at as far as the US population is concerned. ....They are Hispanic and they vote Democratic. Seems you white, "real Americans" can't stop working your dead end jobs and playing Halo to make babies...Sucks for you.
