I thought academic success just meant that you were "acting white". Now it means you're gay too?
I thought this was a US Black-only problem.
Every one I knew when I was younger that thought academic success equaled "acting white" has a record -- every single one -- and they all regret it. Hmm, kinda hard to get a job in a horrible economy when you have no education and a rap sheet, huh? I tell the young ones now that there is nothing wrong with high grades and good grammar and going to school everyday.
But that's not as cool as wearing your pants half-off your butt, smoking weed (), hanging in the streets, selling drugs, and promiscuity which leads to either HIV or a baby. Oh well. We can't save everyone. We need Obamas and Bookmans (from "Good Times") to make the world go round.

I think it's because since most gays in public are white, it's probably "acting white" too. Being from a poor racial minority background, I wouldn't doubt if you're black living in a black community and going to a black school, you best stay in that closet. That's how it is in Puerto Rico and in the latino community. I got a looooot of flack in school for being studious and for speaking properly, or, "talking like a cracka" when I decided to speak English properly and lose my Spanish accent.

It's quite interesting that these issues are now becoming the norm in the UK as well.
