I remember Stockdale. I wasn't heavy into politics then, but I remember the total disaster of his performances.

More info on the statement from the OP here.

James Stockdale Interview

Quote:
JIM LEHRER: Admiral Stockdale, welcome. You were the Reform Party candidate for vice president in 1992, and you participated in the vice presidential debate. In general terms, how would you characterize that experience for you?

ADMIRAL JAMES STOCKDALE: It was terribly frustrating because I remember I started with, "Who am I? Why am I here?" and I never got back to that because there was never an opportunity for me to explain my life to people.

I certainly do.

The man started out great with the "Who am I" remark which was very funny.

He then crashed and burned.

It was a shame as I recall him being a vet and an academic. Struck me as a decent fella who had no business in politics.

Yeah, he was part of the Hoover Institution.

I believe he was a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

I think he was the highest ranking POW in Vietnam & one of the morale-builders in the so called Hanoi Hilton fostering a communication code between inmates. I was in college with his son at the time.

James Stockdale Interview

Yeah, at least he wasn't an actor like the other candidates.

After the debates and election were over, I believe Stockdale had a pretty long run on SNL as Toonces The Driving Cat.

Default What Was He Thinking?

I still can't believe Ross picked this buffoon to be his running mate a few moons ago.
