I agree. I certainly don't condone the use of cocaine or crack due to the dangers that they pose, but the current "war on drugs" is a failure.

Actually, they should all go free. There should be NO prison sentence for using drugs.

We don't need government to tell us what we can eat, drink or smoke.

You have two issues here. Crack sellers were given federal sentences that were not in line with powder cocaine sellers. Because crack was cheaper most crack dealers that got these long sentences were black. They should serve time but there sentences should be inline with those who are serving time for selling powder cocaine. Those convicted of crack use should be released period. They are not considered violent criminals. President Reagan war on drugs implemented these federal laws. One has to remember that crack cocaine was rampant during this time and it was the government attempt to stem the tide. It locked up thousands of young black men for long sentences that much longer than there white suburban powder cocaine dealers were getting.

People should not be thrown in jail for putting something in their own body, it's ridiculous.

The strict laws on crack cocaine were due to the high rate of violent crime that affected Black neighborhoods in the 80s due to the 'crack epidemic.'

Many Black organizations lobbied for stricter penalties for crack users; of course, most people seem to forget this fact now'a'days when talking about the 'racist' and 'biased' crack vs powder debate.
