More than 232,000 D.C. residents — 40 percent of the city’s population — receive either food stamps, Medicaid assistance, welfare checks or some combination of the three, according to Department of Human Services Director David Berns.
Quote:

Spurred by needed cuts in the city budget, D.C. has begun enforcing a cutoff date for welfare check recipients while revamping how the DHS serves those families in the transition.
This is absolutely sickening. How in the world does 40% of a city receive some sort of public assistance? Even worse, it's the Capital City of the United States of America!

Why does it take "budget cuts" to jolt a city into reducing its welfare roles?

It seems that Democrats know exactly what it takes to keep black people on the Democratic Plantation. Otherwise, it wouldn't be "budget cuts" that move people off of the welfare roles, it would be economic growth, jobs, education, and a much needed cultural correction in the DC black community.

This is disgusting.

And I think we all know that 40% of this population is not physically disabled. In fact the Medicaid crowd is generally so physically healthy, they are cranking out more babies for the taxpayers to support than the taxpayers themselves can afford to have.

It's time to cut welfare programs to only those who need them, such as those who are patients in nursing homes who truly cannot do for themselves. Anyone living "independently" can go get a job.

Considering the rest, mostly white, residents are working directly for the Federal government or for firms lobbying the government, I would suggest than more than 99% of the residents of the Washington DC metro region are effectively on welfare. I also suggest the higher these welfare recipients are paid the less they do to improve the City or the Country. Supporting DC's poor is lost in the round off compared to these parasites.

If these dreggs are not qualifed to work in the types of jobs available in the DC area they should MOVE somewhere else. There is no unemployment problems here in Northern Virginia.

Exactly. The article goes on to say that the chances of the City actually voting to decrease welfare budgets is slim because 7 members of the City Council will not vote to cut benefits.

The Democratic Plantation is the Land Of Plenty, and DC residents LOVE IT.

i agree, i'm baffled by the idea of giving welfare to people in the bay area, or new york city, or washington dc. these are the most expensive areas in the nation, no one is entitled to live there.

I see your point, but at least the folks that you speak of actually contribute back to the region, the city, and society.

Have you been to DC lately? If so, did you take a stroll through any of the poverty-stricken neighborhoods? These aren't people down on their luck in a down economy. These are people who wouldn't know hard work if it fell out of the sky and hit them on the head. Criminals and the Perpetually Lazy. Take a look around sometime. I would hope that you'd change your mind after seeing it.

How do people on welfare afford to move elsewhere? I'm not on welfare and I can't afford to move.

All liberals should be forced to live in the hood for a year.
