is this the reason people have lost respect for the police, because the law and morality contradict each other today?

That and the abuse of power. When people in power abuse their authority, they are no longer respected. Unfortunately, it is ubiquitous today. It's common all the way from local LE to the White House.

Who has lost respect for the police? Most people still gladly call them when a crime has been or is being committed, even the internet macho men who claim to sleep with their rifles loaded.

As a truck driver and owner operator, as a rule I still have respect for law enforcement. However I have seen instances when the law has been used as a means to increase revenue for the state and local government. This is not a law to protect the citizens of a state or local area, but rather a hidden tax.. I still respect the officers but I have asked them a few times how it felt to have worked to become a law enforcement officer only to become a tax collector... (They are usually not at all amused.)

I think they're kind of a hybrid organism like one of those sci-fi flicks with half-man/half-machine creatures.

On one hand they are still capable of going after bad guys and exacting justice for the innocent victim, and that of course is a heroic calling. But to a large extent, as freightshaker says, there are their to produce revenue for the government. Often by means of flim-flammery. As time goes on, the former reduces and the latter increases.
