Since Clinton, our government has been spending at exponential rates. What accounts for it? Can we still have a serene society without the extra government spending?

It's REALLY not that hard to figure out. Pork barrel programs account for VERY VERY VEYR VERY VERY VERY little of overall spending even though they get the most attentions. The VAST majority of spending comes from medicare, medicaid, social security, and the military. Find me a politician that will cut spending a lot on any of those. You simply can't. WE THE PEOPLE are to blame for huge deficits, not the government. You simply can't convince people that they need to pay more taxes or take less in social security benefits in order to balance the budget. Don't want to take less in social security benefits? Fine. Don't start whining when the $700 billion dollar Pentagon budget needs a steep cut.

Military spending accounts for only 22% of the budget.
Medicare, Medicaid, social security, social programs [food stamps,SSI] account for 55%

Exactly 70% of the budget right there is Social security, medicare, medicaid, and the military. It's EXTREMELY stupid to cut spending on things like education and infrastructure when they are responsible for very little of overall government spending. Want to cut the deficit? Fine. Quit whining and take a big cut in social security and medicaid benefits you idiots. Or quit all the wars and spending on the $700 bn Pentagon budget. Morons can't have it all. Only complete fools think you can have low taxes, a strong military, and all of the social security benefits promised. Idiots.

The three biggest parts of the federal budget are Defense, Social Security and Medicare. And the last two are paid for with their own dedicated payroll taxes.

In other words, most of what my family sends to Washington in income taxes (and it's ridiculous how much, considering how little we actually have), is the Defense--actually the OFFENSE budget.

And I find it sickening that waging senseless foreign wars that have NOTHING to do with America's interests is taking up almost as much in our nation as Social Security and Medicare.

We could easily defend our nation--which we DON'T DO AT ALL--with one one-thousandth of the money. Time to stop supporting a sick Military Industrial Complex that CREATES the only threat to Americans--terrorism--and does nothing but make it worse as it pretends to "address the threat."

The size of the federal workforce has grown exponentially as has the scope of its reach. Obama alone has grown the size of the federal workforce by 35% under his administration.

More public services/entitlements and more people to qualify for those (retiring boomers and more poor).

Wartime spending.

Waste, fraud, abuse. (include TARP and other bailouts here)

General disregard for showing any responsibility in spending other people's money.
