I agree with this rant as well. In fact, my husband has always said that our children will not be told that they can "be all they want to be" or "do all they want to do" because it's simply unrealistic. Kids need to learn how to deal with failures and how to endure trials. I'm sure that we'll encourage our son along in what he pursues, but part of guiding a child is teaching them to admit to their failures and try harder or learn to be realistic. Of course, I've also seen kids from homes where they are made to feel like dirt and the slightest comment pushes them into tears. I'm not recommending this route.

I have another story to add to the OP. The last public HIGH SCHOOL I taught at banned teachers from using red pens. Why? Studies showed that students perceived their work as failing when they saw a red mark, which (they thought) would make them less likely to try again. The administration suggested we use purple instead.

Could you refer me to legislation and the individuals that passed it that you feel created this mess?

It seems you calling for greater governmental involvment and control of schools?
