A Colorado woman took matters into her own hands when her bike was stolen from outside of a Boulder sports bar. She tracked down her stolen bike on Craigslist, pretended to be an interested buyer and stole back her own bike.

Read into this whatever politics you want, but I am in favor of people being more proactive about this kind of thing.
Years ago when I had some very expensive electronic equipment stolen, I decided to do some very intensive investigative work, following up every lead I could. This stuff was way too valuable to ever put my trust in anybody else handling the matter (i.e. the police). Within the time span of that same day, I had located all my stuff and got it back. I'd really rather not get the police involved in most types of matters from now on. Nobody cares more about your stuff (or your life) than you do, and virtually nobody else is going to have the incentive and motivation to get your stuff back (or to take the steps necessary to prevent your stuff from being stolen to begin with), other than you.

Good luck to you when you get involved with some REAL criminals.
I have occasionally imagined myself using the "find my phone" GPS thing that Sprint offers to track down some crook, sneaking into his drug den, and making off with my phone. Perhaps with a big shootout somewhere in there!
Well, the bike was not stolen from her premises, so the chances of her being tracked are not that great. But if I was her I would stay completely away from the bar it was stolen from.
I would call the cops and tell them I had located my property. I would ask them for an escort to recover the bike. Police are the ONLY people authorized to use force and even they have to have a cause.

That's not true. The owner of the property can use force to protect loss or damage to that property. You, yourself are property.
