The US has seen substantial economic growth and prosperity following World War II. Was it the free market, or social programs?

False dilemma - since 1945 the United States has maintained a mixed economy that borrows both from the concept of a free market economy and from the concepts of a managed economy. You would have to go back to 1870 or maybe even 1800 to find a United States economy that was truly free market based.

I rather expect it was the fact that all serious competition was bombed into ruins, and the USA was the only country with an intact manufacturing economy. And the rest of the world needed to buy American to rebuild.

The US was prosperous because it had no competition at the time the greatest demand in human history was generated.

Overall I agree with what your say, but there were other countries that were at their manufacturing peak at the end of WWII that were/are not as prosperous as us.

You don't create prosperity with laws. It was the simple fact that we had just bombed the hell out of most of the industrialized world. Supply and demand.

Your poll is flawed. It was neither.
The US lucked out in that our mfg wasn't bombed flat.
We didn't have much competition while the other countries had to rebuild their cities.

That is BS, After Japan and Germany rebuilt, they had a much newer and more productive manufacturing. We still stood head and shoulders above them for decades until our government regulated us to death. Also many companies (like the auto industry) gave away the store to the unions. Between both of the above we lost our edge. Then the government taxed corporations the highest rate in the world. That is why we are toast now in the manufacturing sector. The government now tells Boeing in which state they must manufacture their product.

It's much worse than that. Government tells many businesses what products they can sell, when they can sell their products, where they can sell products products and how much they can charge for their products. And then people wonder why the "free market" system isn't working as well as promised.
