Not surprising the most important thing to Americans is Jobs, but congress still seems to be focused on deficit. That could explain why their approval ratings are so low.

That makes sense. Jobs are an urgent problem now. The deficit is more of a medium to long range problem. Also, a lot of our deficit problem is because unemployment still hasn't came down yet. Focusing on jobs and putting people back to work helps lower the deficit.
Jobs are only an urgent problem for about 4-5% though.
Normal UE is about 5%..we're at 9% so that leaves the other 91% with jobs.
And only 65% of Americans participate in the job market.

There are a hell of a lot more people worrying about losing their jobs or being able to change jobs. Otherwise it would only about 9% that care.

That sad number representing those worried about the deficit though could be our downfall. We do need to worry about our widening deficit else we could be facing the same problem as the European nations.
I agree with the poster who said that unemployment is a bigger issue for a lot of Americans, being that if you have no way to put food on your own table, you're going to have less room to think about the bigger picture. But there's also the fact that people have access to credit and other loans and therefore some of them may not feel an urgency to think about the budget deficit they'll end up paying for in the future, the same as their own loans.

I agree; however, nothing sucks like having no money and no job. Rising unemployment is a valid concern. It goes hand in hand with self preservation.
How sad....this further shows how uneducated most Americans are. Financial and economic education in this country is seriously lacking. Statistics like this is why we need to have finance and economics classes in public schools starting at a very young age.
The American way: "Give me my money now, screw the future"
Most people don't understand that with current administration's deficits, the economy will only get worse long term. Much worse. Inflation will take away their savings. Taxes will have to be raised on the middle class shutting down consumer spending and increasing unemployment even hirer. Perhaps the dollar will not be the world currency dramatically increasing the cost of oil and other commodities for us and we won't be able to print money to get out of trouble.
i guess they see banks and corporations flush with fed dollars, and they see the rest of the world minting money in a race to devalue their own currencies and maintain employment.... and they start wondering.
