The Chinese-built oil rig, the Scarabeo 9, is due to arrive in Cuba before the end of the year, to begin drilling a series of exploratory wells.

It has sent alarm bells ringing in the United States because if there were an accident, the ocean currents would push any oil spill onto Florida's beaches and the Everglades.

Yet under the US trade embargo, neither American firms nor the Coast Guard could come to Cuba's assistance or provide much needed equipment such as booms, pumps, skimmers and oil dispersant systems.

This rig will be drilling deeper then the BP oil rig that sprung a leak...

SO? I thought the rightie mantra was Drill Baby Drill. You assume they cannot do it any better than the Brits that overlooked safety for profits, or does it mean NOW you are interested in safety first?

Drill away, but there is only so much oil on this planet and we have probably already used more than half of it. Everyone talks big about alternative energy but there hasn't been any real movement in the area for decades. I guess the plan is to wait until mass starvation before finding something more practicable.

Attrition through war > Starvation, in any scramble for resources.

I suggest we normalize relations with Cuba and stay out of their, and every other Central American country's, internal politics. iI is not our job to protect American investors from local taxes.

The GOVERNMENT cannot do much about oil spills, that is a function of the professionals in the field, or didn't ya know that. Whay the government CAN do is require that oil companies drilling in our waters meet the safety regulations so that spills are minimized, something the right has screamed and whined about like little girls.
