I would not say that Chemistry is a useless degree. Chemist are needed in many industries. Most went on to advanced degrees or Pharmacy School.

In short the reactionary view is that all colleges and universities should be turned into some sort of voctech school. DeVry writ large.

Nah, but I do wonder why they did away with votech school at the high school level. Not sure of your age, but wonder if you remember that? It was a great alternative for those students that didn't plan on going to college but wanted to learn a trade (e.g. electrician, plumber, mechanic, cosmetology, etc). I am a huge advocate of advanced education but at the same time I understand the reality of our world today and those service sectors jobs are essential to our everyday life and it would seem this program should be brought back.

My district has vo-tech. However, it's a misapprehension to think that one can learn to be an electrician or a plumber in a vo-tech high school. These professions take years of post HS education, apprenticeship, etc. I have posted links about this before.

I know my husband's district had votech when he was in school but that program has been eliminated in favor of technical colleges. Since he was from a very poor area of West Virginia, it was an excellent program in order to get these high school students skills that were not going to college nor could afford to go. Most of them ended up licensed upon graduation.

I just think it's a good idea to understand the reality that not everyone will or can go to college. I came from a family where everyone went to school and earned multiple advanced degrees. I suspect my daughter will as well since she wants to get her doctorate as well.

Nonetheless, I understand the reality that not everyone is going to be like that. I am just lamenting that so many schools have eliminated their votech programs. I think it is a viable alternative to college for some students.

Techincal high-schools still exist. In the infamous words of Louis C.K., "[Technical high-schools] are where dreams are narrowed down."

Video Linkage!

Funny quote. Anyway, I am just noting there are less and less of them.

Someone should tell my co-worker, who is one of the best on our team, that his English degree is useless. He should voluntarily quit as to give someone with a more "useful" degree a job.

I think it is fairly obvious, the required education for today's high-technology world and work simply cannot be ascertained in just high-school, where you're still learning to clothe yourself.

Higher education is becoming more and more important--and unfortunately--more and more (and more and more and more and more) expensive.

ADDENDUM: That's kind of what we're all complaining about. This country does not invest in its working class. We provide almost nothing for education, and millions want to cut the paltry benefits the poorest of our citizens have. Abolishing the minimum wage will drive down wages for those who need it most, and they want to destroy trade unions so corporations can pay them far less, and cut their benefits. The level of insanity is--just insane.

I agree. Everyone should jump that bandwagon, let's drive wages down for Aerospace Engineers!

More folks probably should major in Economics, or at the very least, take some courses in it.
