This isn't universally true. In CA some counties, like Orange, they don't let you buy junk food, even soda. Since here Food Stamps is now a card (much like a debit card), there is an electronic trick to preventing you fom buying it. And I hate taking freedoms away from people simply because they are poor.

People have to recognize that while Food Stamps is a federal program, it is administered by the States and counties within them.

Still this is no worse than when the Clinton administration claimed that salsa is a vegetable.
Hmm. Not necessarily. We are not on food stamps and my husband works. My kids qualify for reduced lunch prices.

Right but we all know that is not the sort of pizza being served in our children's schools FTMP.

Glitch cleared this up nicely:

Lightbulb Gotta be PRIORITIES, man...

Why are they doing this to kids?
It's always the same reason.

Money not spent on kids can go to more useful pursuits. Like tax breaks for billionaires or no-bid contracts for Cheney's Halliburton. Or some unnecessary military contract for a corporation that contributes to the right congressional committee chairman.

This is clearly obvious and it's been going on for decades. People should stop getting all huffy and indignant.

It would be interesting to get insight into how each member of the Congress voted on this. Can somebody get & share that data?

It doesn't exist. It was language that was added by House Republicans to the much larger Dept of Agriculture and Commerce Bill. Due to the fact it was added to the language of the actual bill, rather than an Amendment to the bill, no true up or down vote existed on that particular portion of the legislation.

But when you are too poor and not capable of working to support your family but require the government - aka taxpayers - to take care of you, you should not have the freedom to waste their money with junk food purchases.

The problem with food stamps when they aren't restricted is that very often these people fill their carts with chips, soft drinks, cookies, gourmet ice creams, candy. That's a total waste.

Food stamps should be limited to rice, beans, some vegetables, eggs -- real foods to keep people from starving to death.
