Interesting side note, the tobacco Nazis have created a new market, black market tobacco. People are growing it and smoking it themselves or selling to locals for 0 taxes.

On my smart phone, but I will post an article later. A friend of mine sent me a large grocery bag of ready to roll tobacco the other day. I quit smoking years ago though. No real desire to start back.

I always love how anti-smokers love to call smokers addicts and demonize tobacco companies for "profiting from addiction", but they support the government raising taxes beyond what smoking "costs society.

If smoking is really as addictive as heroin or methamphetamine or crack cocaine (like they always claim) then the government taxing it to the point they do is no more noble than mafia taxes on illegal "taxes" on legal drugs. It's basically the same thing. The government is just a mafia family with official letterhead.

^^^The mob takes small truck up to the indian reservations and buys cartons for $25 or so and can bring them back and sell them through bars and other distributions for $50-$60 and easily undercut the tax laden NY price.

I read an article about how one guy was making around $10,000 profit per load....which isn't that hard....400 cartons or so.

Others will just drive up to the indian casino and bring back a months worth of cigs for friends, family etc. and the extra $$$ they get pays for the trip and their gambling money etc.

How long before smokers in New York start sacrifcing some of their limited apartment space to grow their own tobacco plants?

Profiled on various episodes of The Sopranos except they were hitting North Carolina.

I remember taking the ferry from England to France on a daytrip. Everyone, including my English friends, loaded up on cigarrettes to sell in the pubs back home.

You are correct.

Smokers are MUCH less of a burden to social security and medicare because....they die and the smoking doesn't tend to have too many health burdens until you turn up with something fatal and have 6-12months to live.

That's how you fix medicare. Free donuts and cigarettes.

Non-smoker here, but would like to add this is clearly about government officials wanting to protect the public from itself and not about money

Farley also defended the city's high taxes on cigarettes, saying that studies had shown that they are pressuring people into quitting, or not taking up the habit, and thereby saving lives.
Bureaucrats say the darnedest things, taxation saves lives lol

Ah cool, never watched the Sopranos.

There are similar dodges all over the US. I live near the Missouri\KS border and gas taxes are something like 10cents or so cheaper in MO....so everyone fills up there if it's not really out of the way.

Well, duh, what do you think the basic Mission Statement of any governmental public health organization IS, anyway???

Public Health
  • Prevents epidemics and the spread of disease
  • Protects against environmental hazards
  • Prevents injuries
  • Promotes and encourages healthy behaviors
  • Responds to disasters and assists communities in recovery
  • Assures the quality and accessibility of health services
Public Health in America

"Protecting the public from itself" means we anti-smoking Nazis get a fighting chance to breathe air free from the stink and toxic compounds in secondhand smoke. Tax 'em, baby!

the reality of the situation is quite the contrary. In effect they are saying "we will let you smoke, you just have to pay the state for the privilege".

You have been had , hook line and sinker.
