the good thing about america is that you still have a choice... regardless of your upbringing or the what surrounds you.... the path to a successful life is still there for all to achieve.

I really wish that were the case and that we lived in that kind of society. Unfortunately, it isn't true, but people don't want to accept it because it proves that this country is nowhere near as "free" as they believe it to be.

i specifically referring to education. k-12 is available to everyone. Even some states offer free college tution based on maintaining a certain GPA
Electronics are not dirt cheap today. Just because the poor don't bat an eyelash at $999 for a television but they won't pay $100 to see a doctor doesn't make the television very cheap.
It means they most likely don't have $300-$600 per month for health insurance. And if uninsured, it's not just the $100 to see a doctor. Add in the prescription cost, the cost of any bloodwork done and if it's anything serious, a referral to a specialist, which becomes big bucks.

But the $100 for their cell phones with unlimited text messaging is affordable?
It's all about priorities. People won't give up the cable service that goes with their thousand dollar televisions, but when it comes to their health care, they can't afford to pay anything.

Sorry, but I know several working class / poor people and none of them have $1,000 televisions. I guess it's another stereotype that has got completely out of hand and blown out of proportion to make a political point.
The opportunity is there for the poor. It's up to them to take advantage of it.
One cannot be handed wealth; they must work for it and earn it themselves.
Poverty in the USA = more food stamps for more food than one should eat, free utilities, free government housing, WIC coupons, Medicaid that means all the free health care with no copays or premiums. If you want more money, simply have another baby and the extra food stamps, and government handouts pour in.
Poverty in the USA means you can afford a much larger family than a working couple.
I agree, people have become comfortably poor, in the US. They complain about poverty, yet never miss a meal.

Not really since the consensus in this forum agrees that playing by the rules, staying in school, and working hard is NOT a guarantee of success.
