It’s harder to measure the price of a ruined business reputation or the value of investments lost or productivity lost as Alabamians stand in line for hours to prove their citizenship in any transaction with the government. Or what the state will ultimately spend fighting off an onslaught of lawsuits, or training and deploying police officers in the widening immigrant dragnet, or paying the cost of diverting scarce resources away from fighting real crimes.

Make laws in haste, regret them in leisure.

This is an interesting opinion piece from the NYT.

The article says that there are about 95,000 illegals in Alabama's workforce, 4.8% of the total. If they all left and citizens/legal residents took their jobs, how much would that cut into the state's unemployment problem?

And this idea that "what the state will ultimately spend fighting off an onslaught of lawsuits" should be considered is really messed up. Talk about resources. The federal government has very limited resources and it shouldn't be spending so much fighting Alabama and the other states on this. Just think, what if all that money was spent on actually dealing with the illegal immigration problem? Then maybe states wouldn't feel a need to enact this type of law in the first place.

Do I have a problem with parts of some of these laws? Yes. If someone's legal status is questioned based on their race/ethnicity, I have a big problem with it. But, I strongly support laws that require legal status to be verified regardless of race/ethnicity.

According to the last unemployment numbers, Alabama's unemployment rate dropped 0.5% in one month. Funny huh?

Also, farmers do have the option of hiring non immigrant workers throguh the H-2A visa program if they cannot find legal or American workers who are willing or able to take the jobs.

The farmers have options but CHOSE to hire illegal workers which is a FELONY.. All in the name of greed.

They are getting what they deserve.

Illegals NEED to be deported...their presence here is a violationg.

By the way, the NYT is one of the biggest pro illegal immigration newspapers out there. I cannot take them seriously when it comes to the issue.

I never thought it was a good idea in the first place. The kind of jobs they held were low wage dirty work. Some of you will no doubt refer to the recent Business Week article on Dirty Jobs. Actually Americans will do them if paid well enough. An interesting fact in that article was that in Europe, Auto Assembly jobs, which Americans compete for, are unwanted by citizens.

The main issue is all these states like Alabama wanted a bunch of workers, so they looked the other way.

Problem is, they now have people, families and communities.

Entice them to come, then spit on their faces when they are no longer needed.

So Red state, indeed.

Default the fruits of engaging in illegal activity

"Entice them to come, then spit on their faces when they are no longer needed."

That's the practical lesson people need to learn when they engage in illegal activity. No moral or legal obligation is implied.

Each out for their own needs and sometimes you get burned; goes with the territory especially when engaged in an illegal activity.

I am unsympathetic to the plight of both illegal immigrants, and businesses who rely on illegal labor.

It's one thing when single guys come and work for low wages. That becomes a boon to the people who use that labor. An arguable net benefit to the economy. When the whole family and five kids come along, that becomes a social services nightmare. Will we ever eradicate poverty if we keep importing it? One step forward, two steps backwards. How many thousands per year does it take to educate just one child? How much does one child consume in foodstamps, lunch assistance, WIC, etc.? Suddenly the tax payers are subsidizing the profits of business owners. Can buy a lot of organic, fair trade lettuce for the "hidden costs" paid to keep a parallel population of pseudo slaves and their progeny kept around to do "jobs Americans won't do."

In choosing whether to keep the social safety net solvent and useful for Americans, or worrying about the plight of illegals and those that exploit them for profit, I know where I stand.

Ah, but the pro-illegal people will say this was simply a coincidence.

Absolutely. For the market to work, no one should have an unfair advantage. The benefits to the employer of hiring illegals give them just as unfair of an advantage as special tax breaks give big corporations.

A prog rag, is going to support elimination of their exploited slaves?
No way!

The state is taking care of its States legal residents, that pay taxes legally to use the services provided by the State.

What a better way to eliminate the poverty numbers in a State! Less burden on the State to fund and feed the illegal parasites!

I give 3 thumbs up for Alabama.

I don't understand liberals who pretend to care about the environment, poverty, and over-population suddenly change their minds when it comes to importing third world poverty with high birth rates. Suddenly it's damn the environment, damn the third wold conditions and poverty, and we need to pay for all the babies these people choose to have.
