Friend who has been in Marines for 20 years has had gay Marines under his command,it has even become known(through other Marines seeing them) he asked his senior NCO what he thought should be done and the answer was nothing beyond telling that Marine to be more discreet.
Well, then that senior NCO was violating the law. Thousands of gay men and women were thrown out of the military without making it known whatsoever - they were simply discovered or somebody with knowledge of their sexuality turned them in.
Happened all the time.
Our friend was their commanding Officer at the time.

We also knew a few lesbian WM's(Woman Marines),being the Chef at the local 'gay bar' you got to know quite a few.
A gay friend was also in a long term relationship with a Marine stationed at our former hometown,they bought a house together and nothing happened.
I think he might have retired.
I was in 'Nam a few decades ago and we knew who was gay and who was straight. One of the gay guys was an inspired killer that would cover your back under any conditions. He was shot in an ambush and bled out the same color as everyone else.
Just as some straight people make Freudian slips on a regular basis, and then just claim it was a typo.....

The "Freudian slips" don't occur on a regular basis for the explicit purpose of proclaiming gayness, rubbing peoples noses in gay issues and trying to convince people gay is normal and if you don't agree with them you're a bigoted white conservative...
Gays can't control themselves, they are mentally challenged to proclaim their gayness and gay feelings on a routine basis...

The bottom line: 12,000 people who were trained on your and mine dime were kept from using their skills and training because of who they liked to sleep with. It was a stupid, stupid policy and way overdue to be removed.

Seems like an incredibly small number.
I wonder how many were discharged for other,similarly silly reasons?
