"Residents of a wealthy lakefront community near Seattle are surprised to learn that one of their neighbors, who has lived in a $1.2 million home for the last 8 years, is the recipient of more that $1,200 a month in public housing vouchers, federal and state disability, and food stamps. King 5 reports on the couple living large on the taxpayer’s dime..."

Absolutely ridiculous.
They need to be prosecuted and they need to be made to (eventually) pay the money they stole back.

this sort of thing aggravates the hell out of me, because of government incompetence.
it is not that difficult to take the addresses, geocode them, and see if they are in wealthy neighborhoods or not. then you audit those accounts. this is not rocket science.

Everyone deserves a nice home. Even if they never worked.

Sure, let's not name them, even though it had been "alleged" that she committed welfare fraud. I'm sure if she was living in low-income housing here name would have popped up in the first sentence of any article written about this. Now that a civil lawsuit has been filed they have been named. I wonder if Dr. Silverstein will throw her under the bus and tell the court " I had no idea she was doing this."
With technology where it is today, why don't agencies that dole out money to those on welfare, disability, food programs create programs to link and "share" information, including the IRS? Apparently her husband worked and they probably filed jointly. If there was a system in place, her SS would have popped up linking info that she was collecting benefits from the government. Everyone has a social security number which needs to be provided when applying for assistance.
Doesn't social services have people who do sporatic checks and go to the homes of welfare recipients to confirm where they live and go to the home of those on disability?

SHOCKING: Welfare for millionaires
This welfare couple owns a house worth more than a million dollars... and are getting $1200 per month in welfare .... and have been for almost 10 years.
So much for the "temporary measure to help people get back on their feet" defense of government welfare.
This is another example why the government should get out of the welfare business.
A Seattle woman who is receiving welfare assistance from Washington state also happens to live in a waterfront house on Lake Washington worth more than a million dollars.
Federal agents raided the home this weekend but have not released the woman or her husband's name because they have not officially been charged with a crime.
However, federal documents obtained by KING 5 News show the couple currently receives more than $1,200 a month in public housing vouchers, plus state and government disability checks and food stamps. They have been receiving the benefits since 2003.
The 2,500 square-foot home, which includes gardens and a boat dock, is valued at $1.2 million. And even though the couple has been receiving the benefits for nearly 10 years, records show that they accurately listed the address of their current home when applying for the state and federal benefits.

While we're at it, why not scrap the Army the first time it loses a battle? After all, the idea of fixing a system when it malfunctions is just silly, eh?

Paying a mortgage on a million dollar home does not make you a millionaire. This person does not have a net worth of $1 million.
