This kind of idiocy is not restricted to Islam, it is a hallmark of all fundamentalist religions including large numbers of Christian sects.
In the US, we have some states that make it a crime to buy or sell sex toys. There is also the constant clamor from the Christian right to pass laws banning porn and restrict the content in TV shows and video games.
I am aware of the zealots. But this thread is illustrating how wacky it can get, even the most zealot bible-thumping Christian isn't trying to ban the viewing of fruit.
Illicit sex acts and adultery are a sins to Christians, so it's not off the mark for them to try and ban porn, but we are talking about banning the public display of fruit. I doubt looking upon bananas and cucumbers are the Muslim version of sins in the holy Koran.

I believe that you are wrong, there were many Christians up in arms about schools using bananas to teach students how to use condoms. That is definately in the same wacko ballpark.
At least you are honest and admit that you have a double standard when it comes to Christians. I however, find Christian zealotry just as distasteful as Islamic zealotry. In fact, since I live in the US the Christian fundamentalists are much more of a direct, immediate threat to my freedom than any Muslim.
When the RC Church forbids me to touch phallic shaped fruits and vegetables, then it might be equal.
Trying to argue that the RC Church doesn't bring more than their fair share of crazy is absurd. Unless you think it is normal to be scared of women and their birth control pills. And deny women the priesthood based on some ancient beliefs about the proper role of women in society. And who can forget the institutionalized sexual abuse that they allowed to continue unabated for decades.
I can't believe that anyone would say that the Catholic Church has no sexual hangups, it is perhaps what they are best known for.

If I don't like the policies of the church -- I can leave.
If the Cleric's edict were to pass, what would become of a Muslim woman in an Islamic country if she chose to move away from Islam?
Would that be equal?
Don't forget -- this thread is about a Muslim cleric's completely off kilter edict. It's not about Christians. Try to answer without taking the opportunity to bash another religion.
It only starts with cucumbers and bananas. Before you know it, it's also carrots, squash, frankfurters, pencils--the list goes on and on! Then, of course, there are such things as baseball bats (and balls), basketballs, footballs...
The only real solutions are either to shut yourself indoors with no access to media and a very limited food supply, or having someone strike you blind.
Or be in the vicinity of livestock and small children?
