I don't know much about the part of Ecuador in which I am most interested (Esmeraldas) in terms of how friendly it might be for foreigners.

The better areas of Costa Rica are already so full of expatriates that property prices are equal to or more than stateside. Nicaragua and Belize are still affordable.
How about Panama City or Colon?

Even third world nations have restrictive policies. Try getting permission to live in India. Try getting a visa to even visit Saudi Arabia. It's not as easy as people think. If it was, I'd be living in Canada right now.
I can live in Canada right now as my wife has dual citizenship. Not interested in living there.

According to statistics from the US State Department, around 6.4 million Americans are either working or studying overseas, which Gallup says is the largest number ever for such statistic.
Would we expect anything else? The world is becoming more connected, both for travel and study. There are so many opportunities for Americans to work in China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Nigeria, etc. that didn't exist before, of course there is a record number of Americans working or studying overseas and there would be regardless of the current conditions in the US.

Good point. I subscribe to RT's news feed and their anti-American propaganda is astounding. It's no wonder people are so uneducated about the U.S.

Indeed. However, all the nations mentioned are facing tremendous crime problems. Some worse than others but even formerly peaceful Costa Rica has seen an explosion of crimes. It started with omnipresent petty crime, then turned to home invasions, and then started to become violent. The country lacks resources to combat crime effectively and if you live there, you are basically guaranteed to become the victim of crime.

I was happy to be back in a place where I didn't have to sleep with one eye open... My neighbors still have guns under their pillows at night. To me, these places in their current state are no longer viable options.

Certainly a lot of recent graduates in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) are going outside the US for better opportunities. Many have national health care. And many retirees finding out they can live on Social Security better in other countries.

Spending some time studying and/or working in another country is generally considered a good thing. It doesn't mean you have to emmigrate there. although some do.

(And its good for political discussions that people see the way things work in different places. I sometimes feel a lot of the discussions in here are based on carefully constructed reasonings and assumptions that have never been exposed to the real world)
