i think the bigger issue here is how many people think that we can continue with this new level of entitlements, (the sky is the limit on what you are entitled to now-- even illegal immigrants have "rights" to entitlements) the war spending, the government spending, and the destruction of the private sector to fund all this?
throw in the new health care entitlements and this country is finished as we know it.
there is really no free lunch, even though many people think it is true.
Conservatives say they are for small government, yet want to control what poor people eat. Make no mistake, liberals want to do it too.
If they are dumb enough to spend their food stamps on a $5.00 cup of coffee, at least we've met our moral obligation to not let them starve.
Food credits should be for the basic staples to support life, nothing more. I don't care if a poor person buys coffee on their food stamps, but it should be a large bag of ground coffee, not some higher end brand and they should be making their own coffee at home.
I don't think people realize how angry things like this make those who don't get a food allotment, but aren't rich by any means. Things like this lead to trickle up poverty. Eventually more and more people get sick of playing the paycheck-to-paycheck game and it becomes easier to go to the welfare lifestyle. It becomes easy to embrace this lifestyle because people see it as not something that is as awful as it was in the past. Brand new apartment complexes taking Section 8 vouchers, if your a single parent (divorced or never married) more money becomes available for higher education, free or reduced daycare expense, and now food stamps being used for fast food and brand name (meaning top dollar) foods.
Yes it's yet another foodstamp thread (YAFT) in this era of the food stamp President. An Oregon investigative journalist found that it was indeed possible to pay for a a sweet, frothy Starbucks concoction with food stamps. FOX 12 investigators: Food stamps used for Frappuccinos - KPTV - FOX 12
If you watched, it speaks about the Oregon Trail Card. That's a state program not a federal one.
Time to stop blaming Obama. He doesn't control Oregon's program.
Or just eliminate the program.... let charities handle these needs.
Because that worked so well before Food Stamps?
I already posted that the system in this thread is an Oregon program, not a federal one.
Be that as it may. What the right seems to always forget is historical context. The Food Stamp program was started because when John Kennedy ran for president, he traveled through West Virginia to discover, to his amazement, that there were starving people in WV - America. As President, he started the program.
Where were the charities? Nobody wakes up on morning and says, "I want to start a new program." Programs start because of a need for that program. Had charities actually met the hunger need, there wouldn't have been any thought to starting a program.

Hell yes, reduce the bureaucracy to the extent you can. We should always do that.
I agree with Milton.
When you rob the taxpayers to pay for these people, you OWE the taxpayers responsible use of that money. No way should the food stamp crowd be allowed to waste this money, the food stamp program has become an extremely wasteful program with these people dining out, filling their grocery cards with pure junk and expensive luxury meals.
It's one thing to feed the poor but they're living very high on the hog on our money.

Yes -- charities worked better because the goal wasn't to have more people on them than working for a living. In many parts of the country now, more babies are born to welfare programs than to responsible working couples.
The food stamp program is just encouraging a lot of sloth and overbreeding.

First, what welfare programs? Welfare was radically changed under in 1996 with the the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act.
Second, where did you get your statistics from? Because I doubt what you said is actually a fact.
What we do know, is that prior to Food Stamps many Americans were starving and charities did not fill the void. So, how can any rational person say that it worked better before?
You also seem to approve of starvation as a means to control "over breeding." Most nutritional programs aid children. I guess it is ok to starve children huh? Ah, the essence of the compassionate conservative.
I dont want to control what people eat. I just dont want to pay for it.
Oh come on now, don't you want the poor and downtrodden (as well as the lazy and incompetent) to have all the things you don't? Don't you want them to eat fine steaks while you dine on hamburger? Drink Starbucks while you drink Folgers. After all, it will make them feel better about themselves.
Do you have some twisted idea that you should be able to eat as well as people on welfare and food stamps? Just because you get out of bed every morning, work for a living and get paid for it, and they don't, doesn't mean they shouldn't live better than you do. It's their "right" after all.
