Immigration papers aren't something the TSA agents are supposed to be reading in the first place.
I have a friend who was detained for about 20 minutes while they were searching her little baggie of liquids - for the whole 20 minutes! The baggie had nothing but approved toothpaste, contact lense solution, cosmetics, etc.
My dad was randomly selected for a secondary search both ways on a trip within the US. According to him, he was forced to go through the body scanner and not given the option of a pat down (supposedly, you have the right to opt for a pat down instead).
To compare - I was randomly selected for a secondary search at an airport in Canada last year. I wish we could take a clue from Canada on this. I was given the option to go through the body scanner or be given a pat down. I chose the pat down and it was handled VERY professionally. The agent asked if I had any physical ailments or sensitive areas before conducting the pat down. I did not feel violated in any way and the agent was very polite and respectful, calling me "sir" and thanking me for my cooperation many times.
