There would be a lot of irresponsible parents that just wouldn't bother sending their kids to school. You'd either need a big state bureaucracy to make sure everyone did, or...Those kids would grow up with absolutly no chance of making it. Not only would it be the final nail in the coffin of "anyone can make it" America, there would be a sizable illiterate underclass.
Anyone who thinks the present setup has a lot of freeloaders should contemplate that situation.
On of the resonsibilities of society in general is making sure kids get a minimum setup in life even if their parents are unable to. Being able to read and write is part of the minimum package.

Disagree. It's because public schools are for everyone so you will get a range of product, i.e. student, quality. Colleges generally only choose those who are the brightest and the best from this set so the quality of their output is higher.
In this thread, I wanted to break away from the election circus for a minute and focus on a particular issue. I put this here rather than at the education forum simply becuase this issue is more multi-faceted than education itself.
To put it simply, do you feel that the government should be responsible for general education of our youth? .
They need to give vouvhers as an option and also remove the unions from the teachers.
