I thought we finished getting out of the ice age around 6000-8000 years ago. There's evidence there was a slight temperature peak around 6000 years ago and then flattening with a slight decline on average for the next few thousands of years.

That is when temperatures started to rise and the ice STARTED to recede.
Conserving the remaining oil resources for the "heavy lifting" in our future is a win win for everyone, there are some things that solar and wind cannot do, we should be saving oil to fly planes and move heavy objects instead of clogging the roads with wasteful vehicles that could be replaced with vehicles that are powered by renewables.
As I've already pointed out previously we can produce liquid fuels for diesel/kerosene/jet fuel applications domestically using coal. As a practical matter the supply is limitless because competitive alternatives will have long replaced coal before we outstrip the supply. As of right now it would be about half the cost of conventional oil, not only is it cheaper but an influx of new resources on the market will drive the price of conventional oil down as well.
In addition to coal there is trillion barrels of oil locked away in shale within the Green River Formation, that's trillion with T.
While oil shale is found in many places worldwide, by far the largest deposits in the world are found in the United States in the Green River Formation, which covers portions of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. Estimates of the oil resource in place within the Green River Formation range from 1.2 to 1.8 trillion barrels. Not all resources in place are recoverable; however, even a moderate estimate of 800 billion barrels of recoverable oil from oil shale in the Green River Formation is three times greater than the proven oil reserves of Saudi Arabia. Present U.S. demand for petroleum products is about 20 million barrels per day. If oil shale could be used to meet a quarter of that demand, the estimated 800 billion barrels of recoverable oil from the Green River Formation would last for more than 400 years1.

Drilling our way to independence perhaps not but the list of nations that will able to claim energy independence in the coming decades is a very short including the US, Russia and Canada all of whom have vast fossil resources compared to their energy needs. NO. The ice started to recede before 12000 years ago. Northwestern europe was warm and suitable for agriculture at 6000 years ago. I'll dig up links in a bit if you're interested.

Actualy there was a mini ice age in the 1800's. Maybe it is still retreating?

Yes. I know there was a "little ice age". The statement before was that we're still recovering the ice age (glacial period over 10000 years ago) which is I think is completely wrong. Recovering from the little ice age is a different idea.
