Not necessarily, all our income isn't spent on rent. Graphs that show percentage of income spent on the basics of things like food and clothing show a very dramatic drop in the percentage of our incomes that go towards those necessities.

I've also seen charts of hours worked to acquire different goods, and they are almost all much lower for today for things like appliances, food, clothing, etc.
