Libertarians were right on this issue. As for Germany, I'm confident they can fend for themselves and hold themselves to the same standard they'd impose on Greece.
We've already abandoned something like 200 bases from the heights of the Cold War and in a lot of cases, we're still spending millions to maintain them, sitting there empty. The reason, supposedly, is to ease the impact on the local German economy.

How kind of us to be worried about another countrys economy. Stupid , but kind.
It kind of makes me sad to see our soldiers to leave Germany. But I guess it is part of the downsizing of our millitary. A long era comes to an end.
I served in Germany many moons ago. I'm glad I had the opportunity but I agree that our troops are not needed there. They weren't needed there when I served.
I liked the part in the article talking about how the American presence has changed the area. Now instead of razor wire at the border with the Chech Republic there is just a friendly checkpoint. Take that America haters.

I doubt if they do that in the US. I may be wrong, but I think when base closures occurred they lost tax revenue and money into the local economy was not subsidized, it just disappeared when the bases closed.

If one reads the article, there will still be American troops stationed in Germany.
Its been an interesting evolution. Combat Forces>Occupation Forces>Defensive Forces>Logistical Forces
