Recall that about a year ago, CraigsList shut down its ad section for prostitution, under pressure from 41 state attys general. They did it under protest, replacing the section heading with the word 'censored' on the site's main page.
Predictably, all the business simply shifted to other sites, in particular backpage.com. Now the far-left Seattle Mayor and moderate Republican atty gen (and candidate for WA gov in 2012) are joining forces in a kind of Abbott-Costello-style partnership to declare war on the website backpage.com, which is owned by Village Voice Media.
The saga started with a horribly amateurish 'study' conducted by a small PR firm for an anti-prostitution activist group. The study was thoroughly debunked in a Village Voice article: Women's Funding Network Sex Trafficking Study Is Junk Science - Page 1 - News - New York - Village Voice
Even so, the activist group that commissioned the study said that they used it to raise over $1 million in taxpayer dollars to further their efforts.
The same news site reports a murder yesterday at a bar in a Seattle suburb. OMG, shut down all the bars!
What a Comstockian crusade this is. One thing I was hoping would come out of the Clinton era would be a decline of sex police, but it hasn't happened. Just the reverse--I don't have any stats or studies of my own to cite, amateurish or not, but it seems to me that we have more sex police action now than ever before.
Isn't this form of prostitution via the web much preferable to streetwalkers blighting neighborhoods??? The same hysteria that surrounds Marijuana is going to engulf the sex business.
No, prostitution is not great....but if consenting adults want to engage in this activity.....they should be able to without Big Brother having a hissy fit.

Try explaining that to the guys wife... I am quite sure she is not consenting
Oh well, as long as YOU feel good, right? Who gives a flying **** about the families that get destroyed
Or the minors who are often being pimped on these sites
First, there aren't that many minors. This whole crusade started in Seattle in 2008 when Seattle police ran a massive prostitution sting. They place some fake ads on CraigsList and arrested over 100 people. Exactly one minor was found during the operation.
Secondly, by driving the trade further underground, you create the environment for more involvement of minors. We all know that it tends to be easier for kids to get pot than booze. Of course this is because drug dealers don't ask customers for ID. Or consider the strip clubs. They are legal and regulated, unlike prostitution. Almost never do you see a news story about a minor found working at a strip club.
So the approach of Mayor McGinn et al is actually bringing in more minors to the sex trade. I gotta ask myself, why do they want that?

The man will still have picked up the hooker regardless of it being legal or not legal. Do we need government protecting us from cheating on our spouses, too?

Because there are victims involved, there should be the law in place. This is not a victimless crime..... unless the man is NOT MARRIED and has NO KIDS

THAT is between him and his family. Not the government.
Otherwise, alcohol should be illegal. Or at least, getting tipsy or drunk should be illegal. Far more people are beaten, abused, killed because of drunkenness. Be it daddy coming home drunk from the bar, or drunk drivers.
Drinking is NOT a victimless crime... unless you do it alone, at home.
We can apply this same logic to any vice. What about the father who buys a bottle of vodka? Since he has a wife and kids, this is NOT a victimless crime. Should he be arrested then? What about the mom who overeats and doesn't exercise? It's a bad example for her kids, therefore NOT victimless. Up against the wall, mom!

Drinking and driving IS against the law
If you do it at home, it is mostly safe. Prostitution is a victimless crime unless someone is married.
Are people really this dense...
