Actually, what you said in mock was historically what happened. The FDA was created to address widespread unhealthy, unsafe and dangerous practices by unscrupulous producers who sold adulterated foods and drugs. While vendors don't intend to kill their customers, without regulation they will cut corners to have a competitive advantage over other vendors. Those corners are using inferior meat or rotten meat that has been seasoned so consumers do not realize it's rotten; selling meat from different types of animals not on the label, etc. It's really not a stretch to think that companies will do whatever they can to increase profits.

Someone didn't wake up one morning and decide to regulate food safety. It was a response to a market failure.

Since we do NOT have anything resembling "small government" the thread title is intentionally misleading and a huge FAIL!

Try this one: Big Government, so inefficient and wasteful of funds FDA fails to protect food supply!

Sadly this post is the result of being under the states rule for so long.
Government only offers the pretense of keeping us safe, while the real agenda is controlling behaviours and robbing us.

Why don't you study up on the incestuous relationships between big ag, the Monsanto Corp and the federal government?

The government created this monster and you're complaining because it's gotten out of control and they can't reign it back in ?

We have a broke government who has no more money, not a small government.
And even if we had abundant cash I doubt the FDA would get that much more funding; it would probably go to the DHS/TSA instead.

When was that? I've seen little evidence of such on gravestones in cemetaries in the USA.

Uh...how many of those advances were funded by government research grants or as a result of other government agencies, such as NASA, needing something?
