I don't think that the article gives enough details - I wonder what medications he was looking for (narcotics, I'd assume) and why they were denied to him.....
Man falls, or gets hurt at work, whatever, has pain problems, possibly back.
Doc prescribes 30 days worth of vicodin.
Man takes vicodin every day for 30 days, mans body becomes tolerant (aka addicted)
Man goes back to see doc, doc keeps giving it to him.
Man moves, or for some reason is unable to get the same medication anymore..man goes crazy because his body is physically and psychologically addicted to the endorphins.
Man goes to drastic measures to achieve the high.
In fact, shooting himself in the leg would have released a MASSIVE influx of endorphins, but when your system is wrecked it might not, in fact the pain would maybe have been enhanced even because his endorphine' were not able to be released as effectively.
pain pills are very very addictive. the drug can become more of the problem than the pain issue. i doubt his difficulty in obtaining meds was the direct cause of his self inflicted wounds. btw it didnt say suicide it said shooting.

annual Fortune 500 survey, the pharmaceutical industry
topped the list of the most profitable industries
Another casualty in the useless and pointless War on Drugs.
