If you live in a country that is not extreme in terms of poverty vs wealth, there is not as much need for social mobility in the first place.

I think that summed it up nicely. Our poor arent even close to poor by anyones standards. Its not that its harder to climb the ladder here, its that there isnt much of a need when government now supports so many americans from cradle to grave..

Does the OP really expect people on welfare, or those on social security to climb the economic ladder?

Our educational system, which is a virtual monopoly, stinks. Untill the union stanglehold is broken, things will not improve.

However, not all studies share the conclusion of the one linked in the OP.

What I had said actually applies to both the US and Europe, in the former as poor people there are not really poor like Africa poor, in the latter because societies there are on average much more egalitarian to begin with.
