2 years at full benes is to far to the other extreme, Katiana. Nothing wrong with 26 weeks, perhaps even a short additional period, but almost 2 years creates people more used to relying on others, rather than choosing any possible means to be self-sufficient.
unfortunately it's a vicious circle, I know many skilled workers who could and would go flip burgers at Mcdonalds, but in today's economy seeking skilled employment is a full-time job most of the time. Add a family to that and if you settled for flipping burgers you'd have no time to seek actual employment that fits your skills and financial needs. THAT is why people are turning to these jobs after unemployment benefits run out.. because they have to to feed their families.. to say they should have done it when they first could is a bit harsh and unrealistic. It's not a matter of a job being beneath you or what not...it's about financial and family obligations that must be taken care of when sudden lay-off strikes.
I don't believe these right wing simple answers are well thought out. It's one of those "looked good on paper" things.. which is how most right wing answers to problems are...
Who is to say that men taking jobs in retail, or any other person taking a job paying lower than the one they lost, only took those jobs because their UI ran out? Isn't it possible that they took those jobs and still had several months before their UI ran out?
Jobs not only pay a salary, they provide benefits. And the individual who took that job once again becomes a taxpayer.
I know someone who, after working 13 years or so, has been collecting UI for 10 months. Single mother with 2 young children. She has basically limited her options as she used her body as a canvas, so she has to stick to the industry she worked in (which she loves) where tats aren't an issue. Even if her skills were outstanding and transferable, more than likely she wouldn't have any success in finding a job in a more conservative workplace/industry, regardless of how good she could be at doing the job. She has been looking for work since losing her job due to staff cutback. She has sent out over 100 resumes and has gone on several interviews with no luck.
Between her UI and child support, she is not eligble for any other government assistance as she is over the limit. She struggles each month. She is not in a position to take a min wage job as she has to factor in the cost of childcare. She has constantly told me that she hates being in her current situation. She has an interview coming up and she hopes and prays that she gets the job.
A single parent with [a] youngster[s] has more to consider when taking a job than someone who has no children, or their children are in their teens, or there is someone in the home to care for youngsters who require care, and where there is no cost for childcare. The majority of single mothers working don't have the luxury of going on vacations because they can't afford to, or take sick days when they get sick. Mothers drag themselves into work when they get sick, because they use their vacation and sick time for when their children get sick and they need to be home with them. So if a single mother turns down a job that can't cover her overhead - which would include the additional expense of childcare - and UI does cover her overhead - absent the cost of childcare, it would make sense until she finds a job that can cover all her expenses, including an expense many people don't have to factor in their cost of living.
I guess it's how you are raised. If you're raised by animals you won't do certain jobs because they are deemed to be beneath you. If you are raised proper your parents will teach you that there is dignity and pride involved in all honest work. Then they'll make you work these jobs when you are younger , and in doing so it will motivate you for life to work your asz off to put yourself in a position to never have to work in those types of jobs again. However, having done the job before you realize that youd do whatever you have to do to support your family.
Yeah, and you "middle aged guys" who are checking out at the supermarket now because you can't find other jobs - QUIT MAKING MY BAGS SO HEAVY!
