The concept that all men are endowed with certain rights no man, or group of men (government) can take away took time to overcome the previous status quo philosophy that might makes right. Yes, it is a bit ironic that the Declaration of Independence was written by a slave owner.
Obviously, slavery is incompatible with the principle of self=ownership, as are transfer payments, vice laws, military inscriptions, etc.
