Baghdad, Iraq - While the US military has formally ended its occupation of Iraq, some of the largest western oil companies, ExxonMobil, BP and Shell, remain.
On November 27, 38 months after Royal Dutch Shell announced its pursuit of a massive gas deal in southern Iraq, the oil giant had its contract signed for a $17bn flared gas deal.
Yeah, who didn't see this coming though? I'll never forget seeing Hillary Clinton and the Prime Minister of Iraq on C-SPAN during this conference in Washington that was supposed to encourage U.S. companies to "Invest in Iraq." It was weird because while this conference was going on .... U.S. soldiers, men and women were in Iraq getting blown up or shot up. It was odd. I would see that live conference on one channel and on another channel were reports of more U.S. troops who had died in Iraq.
It didn't sit too well, nor make any sense. It was obvious that the most important thing was to create wealth out of Iraq for U.S. business interests. Of course, I'm not saying that that is what the war was all about (maybe it was), but they definitely weren't going to miss a chance to cash-in on the takeover.
So, western oil companies are staying in Iraq. You seem to think that's a bad deal.
Well...can you name any EASTERN oil companies other than Gazprom? Would you rather see that oil developed by a state-owned Chinese company or Hugo Chavez?

China's largest oil company started work on a major field last summer.
It has one of the biggest oil contracts in Iraq.
Instead of invading, the US govt could have simply bought the oil from Iraq, as the US has been doing for years.
But I guess Dubya thought it would be more profitable for him and his oil buddies to steal it.
US oil companies do business all over the world because they are damn good at what they do. Exxon's profits aren't just because they happen to be in the oil business, they are good at it. If you had two competing wells, one run by Exxon in Iraq and another in Iran run by whoever the one run by Exxon is going to be far more productive.

Even though the US troops left and violence in Iraq very high it seems there is business as usual there.
Of course they stay. Why should the oil companies pull out, when they benefit both parties?
