After all FAUX NOISE is still operating and the Heritage Foundation has not been burned to the ground with all the occupants inside and the Koch brothers are not in jail. That is what a dictatorship would do.
BTW - the "half" of the country that does not pay income taxes has effectivly no income to tax. They pay sales, excise and property taxes instead. Actually the lower 50th percentile pays a far higher portion of their income in taxes than the rest. Avoiding taxes is the biggest perk of the very wealthy.

In this entire thread no one has mentioned the essential ingredients for a dictatorship to exist. The ruling party, be it an individual or a group has got to have under it's control a force that will murder or dissappear any number of people at any time without question. There can be no freedom of speech at all, all media has got to be controlled by the regime TOTALLY. All political opposition has to be completely eliminated, those who can not be brought onside are liquidated.
The dictator must have the mind of Stalin who once said, "When a person dies it's a tragedy, when a million people are killed it's a statistic".

Now ask yourself...is Congress doing their job regarding checks and balances and that the various branches of the government are staying within their authority ?

Not all dictators are as ruthless as Stalin.
There have been pretty mild dictators, who nevertheless were dictators. Peron or Pidsulski come to mind. They didn't commit mass killings and didn't liquidate their enemies - they merely used censorship and occasional violence to shut their enemies up.
