What are public sector unions for? (salaries, health care, politicians, retirement)

If private sector unions are to protect workers from unfair labor practices from the part of evil capitalists and corporations, are public sector unions meant to protect workers from evil taxpayers, you know the ones who pay their salaries?
To protect the workers against the mean and evil government who would let them work for pennies under slave conditions and with no benefits if the unions went away.
Union, regardless of being public or private, of workers or businesses or professionals, have the same purpose: Self interest. This is no different than people coming together to represent a state or a country: Self interest. The idea is to have a greater voice than an individual can provide.
To raise property taxes for their retirement and health care so they dont have to pay for it. most that retire leave the host state to right to work states and retire like kings with the lower property taxes. my area likes their money so thanx. good gig if you can get in on it

If that was the case the government wouldn't allow public workers to unionize.

I don't know, why would any city managers sign the contract?
They protect public sector workers from corrupt politicians or a board member with a political agenda
Their union bosses' political agendas, on the other hand, are sacrosanct.
