I don't think it's accurate to compare ethnic groups to secessionist governmentments.
the confederacy is representative of a cultural and ethnic group: white southerners. In my opinion the undertones of the whole thing are a quasi-nationalist pride of the whites of the deep south.
i think to some people, "The Confederacy" is directly equated with slavery. I think to many white southerners, the two are not so intertwined.

i did. i'm telling you what my experiences are, as a white southerner, with a dozen confederate ancestors.
and you are correct, definitions don't mean much. dictionaries, encyclopedias, and history books are usually written by professors from boston, not farmers from alabama.
if you want the yankee version of why, hundreds of years later, southerners still care about the confederacy --- well, that is easily found.
We should remember forever those that fought to defend their rights, their families and their farms. You may not agree with them, but they are heroes nonetheless.
The soldiers that fought on the side of the South are exactly equal to those who fought on the side of the North. And both are the same as those that fought in our Revolutionary war.
Comparing the honor of soldiers to MLK is like comparing oranges to hamburgers. It's useless.
