I think MLK's impact on America should merit him a nationally recognized holiday. BTW, I say this as one who has to work that day.
Exactly what impact is that?
I said no. If we are celebrating his call for non-violence, why not have a Gandhi holiday? or a Mother Theresa holiday? Have his calls for character over color been heard? I think not.

He spearheaded the civil rights movement that changed America forever and also like a poster said he died for his cause. His actions are just as important as the Declaration of Independence to the US and if you think otherwise then feel free to work on Jul 4.
Even though he was by no means a man of great moral character he still represents to our mixed society a leader that pushed to get the rights that his brothers and sisters had been denied. We need to honor his great cause with a holiday.
Especially when one considers that, in his private life, by all accounts he was not the bastion of goodness we like to remember him as.
"By all accounts"? Last I heard, some of the oft repeated, less than pristine details about his personal life are commonly disputed and some are even dismissed as myths.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wasn't a saint, but a man. He was a man who did a lot of good to help change the world.
I've heard a lot of people including several of people I work with openly express that they support/supported the civil rights movement but they don't support MLK day as being a holiday. surprisingly about half of these people are not white either.
So my question is, do you think MLK day should be a holiday and why or why not?
The government, banks and schools have another day off to play golf and video games while those of us that pay their salaries go to work and toil away as usual. Either everybody should get it off or nobody should get it off. It has nothing to do with MLK. I would say the same thing about all those "government and banks only" holidays.
Yes it should be celebrated. MLK was a Peace maker!
