Of the 46 million people living in poverty in America in 2010, the U.S. census revealed that 31 million were white.
Of the 49 million people without health insurance coverage, 37 million were white; 8 million were African American. Latinos of every race and Asian Americans represented the remaining largest ethnic groups.
nearly 70 percent of all benefits of these programs go to white people.
poor whites across Appalachia and the Mississippi Delta and through the Midwest, Deep South and Texas borderlands were the highest percentage of Americans relying on the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), or food stamp, program.
36 million Americans relied on food stamps. More than 24 million of them were white, 8 million were African American and 6 million were Hispanic of any race.
Northern NH is not doing well after the paper mills closed.
The right has made poverty a racial issue in order to distract people form the results of years of economic mismanagement. Poverty is an economic problem not a racial problem.
The poverty economics that dominates our country can be changed but too much wealth would have to go back to the victims the Republicans will never let it happen. The best weway of lowering poverty is to stop our colonial wars as well as countervailing tariffs to return industrial production to the US.

I think you hit the nail on the head. As this country moved away from industrial/manufacturing into the tech side of things, we disconnected a large base of folks who depended upon these jobs for survival. It's amazing how our politicians and these corporations let so many jobs go overseas just to save a profit.
I'm not patriotic by any means but building things in America means so much to so many. But what they ultimately did is create a poverty class who do not have the education nor technical skills to make it.
I've never heard that. There is the fact that the Black poverty rate is roughly twice as high as the White rate. As is the unemployment rate.
If the formula that was used prior to Bill Clinton taking office the white percentage of unemployed would more likely be higher. The actual unemployment rate as it stands in real numbers is 20+%, not 8.6% that was announced last month. Using the formula prior to Clinton, I think you would see a slight movement to raise the percentage of black unemployment, but a larger percentage would be contributed to the addition of white unemployment. Today the Bill Clinton formula is used. Bill liked the phrase "economy stupid".
There are different formulas to calculate the unemployment rate. U3 is the one government likes best. The U5 formula brings the percentage closer to reality.
Quote:
The U3 is today’s official unemployment rate. It represents those people in the total civilian work force who are unemployed and still seeking to be employed. It is a number that is less than half as high as the unemployment number that was used until after President Clinton took office, and it woefully under reports the serious problem in the present U.S. job market.
Omitted from the "still seeking to be employed" in the U3 formula are those who have not found employment after 1 year and are considered more or less as having given up, so they are no longer part of the unemployed, it's as if they never worked and don't need to be counted.
